St Paul’s View

St Paul's Cathedral

I really do love this building, and try to seek it out wherever I go in London, especially if I’m up high. Though it took me some time to realise that the lights which highlight the dome seem to turn off at 11pm. I remember being up a building at the end of last year and looking in the direction of this cathedral but completely missing it as I had really expected to see the dome shining brightly; alas it was around 3am and not to be.

This particular image was taken from the top of a statue on the embankment opposite the Millennium Wheel; a spur of the moment and very lucky urbex trip on Sunday.

I found the surrounding lights to be a little distracting, especially the bright blue of the National Theatre, so decided to fade them out a little in process for this image and have just the dome fully lit in an attempt to draw the focal point to that alone. A crop would have been a little too restrictive as I did want the dome surroundings to be in the image, and a vignette blue may have done the trick but would still have let in too much light.

The biggest issue I have with this image is that it looks too different depending on the monitor I am viewing. I processed at home, as always, so it looks great on that monitor but seems to be too dark on my work monitor – the cranes blend too much into the night sky. I think I generally find this an issue with night photo processing. I sit in a dark room in the evening and things look good on the monitor, but looking at them on other devices in daylight is never the same.

Hope this shot looks okay on your screen – if not turn off all the lights and see if it improves; or come around to mine at midnight for a few beers and look at it on my screen instead.

Great shot, Mike. It almost looks like a collage! 🙂

Love the details in the dome…although it does look a bit dark on my monitor as well.

@John – thanks; hmm, perhaps I should actually do a collage. I must have enough photos of London by now to do a pretty decent skyline!

@Heath – cheers; I think I may need to turn down the brightness on my monitor at home for the night images so I’m forced to make a little lighter.
